What Is Allantoin?
Allantoin (5-ureidohydantoin) is a naturally occurring compound found in comfrey root, sugar beet, chamomile, and wheat sprouts. In skincare, it's typically produced synthetically for purity and consistency. Allantoin is classified by the FDA as a skin protectant, and it earns this designation through a remarkable combination of properties: it's a keratolytic (gently dissolves dead skin cells), a humectant (attracts moisture), a soothing agent (calms irritation), and a cell proliferant (stimulates cell turnover for faster healing). How to Use Allantoin
