Bakuchiol
A plant-based retinol alternative that delivers anti-aging benefits without the irritation — the gentle path to youthful skin.
What Is Bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol is a meroterpene (a partial terpenoid) extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia (babchi plant), which has been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. In 2019, a landmark British Journal of Dermatology study demonstrated that bakuchiol provides retinol-like effects — improved wrinkles, pigmentation, and overall photodamage — without the characteristic retinol side effects of dryness, peeling, and irritation. Unlike retinol, bakuchiol does not bind to retinoic acid receptors; instead, it appears to modulate gene expression through a different pathway, upregulating collagen production and downregulating MMP enzymes that degrade collagen. This makes it a true functional analog rather than a direct retinoid, which explains both its effectiveness and its gentleness. Bakuchiol has become the go-to ingredient for those who can't tolerate retinol, including pregnant women (though always consult your doctor), sensitive skin types, and beginners.
Key Benefits
- Reduces wrinkles and fine lines comparable to retinol in clinical studies
- Improves skin tone, brightness, and overall photodamage
- No retinol-like irritation — no dryness, peeling, or redness
- Stimulates collagen production without retinoid receptors
- Safe for sensitive skin, pregnancy, and retinol-intolerant individuals
- Can be used morning and evening (no photosensitivity)
How to Use Bakuchiol
Apply bakuchiol serum (0.5–2% concentration) once or twice daily after cleansing. Unlike retinol, bakuchiol can be used in both morning and evening routines without increasing sun sensitivity. It's also compatible with most other actives in the same routine — a major advantage over retinol. Start with once daily and increase to twice daily for enhanced results. Visible improvements typically appear after 8–12 weeks of consistent use. Bakuchiol can also be used as a stepping stone to build tolerance before introducing retinol.
Pairs Well With
Can be combined with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and vitamin C — even in the same routine. Bakuchiol + squalane is a gorgeous anti-aging + hydration pair.
Avoid Combining With
No major conflicts. Unlike retinol, bakuchiol doesn't conflict with AHAs, BHAs, or vitamin C. Some purists prefer not to mix it with retinol, but there's no evidence of harm — they may even be complementary.
