Beta-Glucan

An immune-boosting polysaccharide that hydrates deeply, soothes irritation, and accelerates skin repair — the unsung hero of K-beauty.

What Is Beta-Glucan?

Beta-glucan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide (complex sugar) found in the cell walls of oats, mushrooms (especially reishi and shiitake), yeast, and barley. In skincare, beta-glucan from yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and oats (Avena sativa) is most commonly used. It functions as both a powerful humectant (attracting and retaining moisture even more effectively than hyaluronic acid in some studies) and an immunomodulator that activates the skin's Langerhans cells — the immune cells that serve as the first line of defense against pathogens and environmental threats. Beta-glucan also promotes collagen synthesis and wound healing, making it a multi-functional ingredient for both hydration and repair. Despite its impressive credentials, beta-glucan remains one of K-beauty's most underappreciated ingredients, often overshadowed by hyaluronic acid despite offering comparable (and in some metrics, superior) hydration.

Key Benefits

  • Delivers deep, lasting hydration — studies suggest it may outperform hyaluronic acid
  • Boosts the skin's immune function by activating Langerhans cells
  • Soothes irritation, redness, and sensitivity
  • Accelerates wound healing and skin repair
  • Stimulates collagen production for anti-aging benefits
  • Forms a protective film on the skin, preventing moisture loss

How to Use Beta-Glucan

Apply beta-glucan serum or cream after cleansing and toning, in both morning and evening routines. It's extremely gentle and requires no gradual introduction. For maximum hydration, layer beta-glucan with hyaluronic acid (apply HA to damp skin first, then beta-glucan on top). Typical concentrations in skincare range from 0.5–2%. Beta-glucan absorbs quickly and layers beautifully under other products. It's particularly beneficial for compromised or recovering skin after procedures, retinol, or acid treatments.

Pairs Well With

Pairs beautifully with hyaluronic acid (layered hydration), ceramides (barrier repair), and centella asiatica (soothing). Beta-glucan + ceramide + panthenol is an elite barrier-repair trio.

Avoid Combining With

No conflicts. Beta-glucan is a gentle, non-reactive ingredient compatible with everything. It's particularly valuable as a supportive ingredient in active-heavy routines.
