Ceramides

The mortar between skin cells that holds the barrier together — essential for preventing moisture loss and protecting against irritants.

What Is Ceramides?

Ceramides are a family of waxy lipid molecules (sphingolipids) that constitute approximately 50% of the intercellular lipids in the stratum corneum — the skin's outermost protective layer. Think of skin cells as bricks and ceramides as the mortar: together with cholesterol and free fatty acids, ceramides form the 'brick-and-mortar' structure that keeps moisture in and irritants out. The human skin contains at least 9 different ceramide classes, each with specific functions. Ceramide loss — from aging, harsh cleansers, over-exfoliation, or environmental damage — directly leads to dryness, sensitivity, and barrier dysfunction. Topical ceramides (especially NP, AP, and EOP types) replenish these lost lipids, restoring the barrier and dramatically improving hydration retention. This is why ceramide-based products are the backbone of K-beauty's barrier-repair philosophy.

Key Benefits

  • Restores and strengthens the skin barrier
  • Prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL) for lasting hydration
  • Protects against environmental irritants and allergens
  • Reduces sensitivity and reactivity in compromised skin
  • Supports the efficacy of other skincare ingredients
  • Essential for recovery after harsh treatments like retinol or acids

How to Use Ceramides

Apply ceramide-rich moisturizer or serum after water-based treatments, ideally while the skin is still slightly damp. Ceramides are most effective in products that also contain cholesterol and fatty acids in an approximately 3:1:1 ratio (ceramides:cholesterol:fatty acids), which mimics the skin's natural composition. Use morning and evening, with extra emphasis on the evening routine when the skin is in repair mode. For severely compromised barriers, layer a ceramide serum under a ceramide cream. Consistent daily use is key — ceramide levels deplete daily and need constant replenishment.

Pairs Well With

Essential pairing with hyaluronic acid (hydrate + seal). Also pairs perfectly with niacinamide (boosts natural ceramide production), centella asiatica, and panthenol for a complete barrier-repair routine.

Avoid Combining With

No conflicts. Ceramides are barrier lipids, not actives — they work with everything. The only caution: avoid applying over heavy occlusive layers, which can prevent ceramide absorption.
