What Is Ferulic Acid?

Ferulic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid) is a hydroxycinnamic acid found in the cell walls of plants including rice bran, oats, citrus, and apple seeds. In plants, it serves as a UV-protective antioxidant, and it performs the same function in skincare. Ferulic acid's claim to fame is its synergistic relationship with vitamins C and E: a 2005 Duke University study showed that adding ferulic acid to a vitamin C + E formula doubled the photoprotection from 4-fold to 8-fold UV protection. It also stabilizes notoriously unstable L-ascorbic acid, preventing oxidation and extending shelf life. Ferulic acid works as a free radical scavenger, particularly effective against hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite — two of the most damaging ROS generated by UV exposure. It's also an effective standalone antioxidant, but it truly shines as the third member of the C + E + Ferulic trinity.

Key Benefits

  • Doubles the photoprotective efficacy of vitamins C and E
  • Stabilizes vitamin C, preventing oxidation and extending shelf life
  • Provides standalone antioxidant protection against UV damage
  • Neutralizes hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite
  • Reduces UV-induced erythema (sunburn redness)
  • Enhances overall skin brightness and anti-aging results

How to Use Ferulic Acid

Ferulic acid is most effective as part of a vitamin C + E + ferulic serum — this is how it delivers its maximum benefit. Apply 4–5 drops of the combined serum in the morning after cleansing, before moisturizer and SPF. If using a standalone ferulic acid product, apply it before vitamin C to prime the skin. Ferulic acid is generally well-tolerated, though some people are sensitive to the Skinceuticals-type formulas (which contain high vitamin C at low pH). Store antioxidant serums in a cool, dark place and discard if they turn orange or brown (sign of oxidation). Morning use is optimal for photoprotection.

Pairs Well With

THE pairing is vitamin C + vitamin E + ferulic acid — the gold standard antioxidant trio. Also pairs well with niacinamide and resveratrol for additional antioxidant support.

Avoid Combining With

Avoid using in the same routine as retinol or strong acids — not because of safety, but because the vitamin C component works best at a different pH. Use the C + E + Ferulic serum in the AM, retinol in the PM.
