Hyaluronic Acid
A powerful humectant that can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, delivering deep hydration and plumping fine lines.
What Is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found throughout the body's connective tissues, with roughly half of the body's total HA residing in the skin. In skincare, it functions as a powerful humectant — a substance that attracts and retains moisture from the environment and deeper skin layers. A single gram of hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it one of the most effective hydrating ingredients available. HA molecules come in various molecular weights: high-molecular-weight HA sits on the surface providing an immediate plumping effect, while low-molecular-weight HA penetrates deeper for lasting hydration.
Key Benefits
- Delivers intense hydration by attracting and binding water to the skin
- Plumps fine lines and wrinkles for a smoother appearance
- Supports the skin barrier by maintaining optimal moisture levels
- Soothes dry, irritated, or compromised skin
- Works well for all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin
- Enhances the efficacy of other skincare ingredients by improving skin hydration
How to Use Hyaluronic Acid
Apply hyaluronic acid serum to damp skin after cleansing — this is crucial, as HA draws moisture from its surroundings. If applied to dry skin in a dry climate, it can actually pull water from deeper skin layers, causing dehydration. Follow immediately with a moisturizer to lock in the hydration. Use morning and/or evening. Concentrations of 1–2% are standard in serums. Multi-molecular-weight formulas offer the best of both worlds. In dry or cold climates, always layer an occlusive on top to prevent moisture loss.
Pairs Well With
Works with virtually everything. Especially effective layered with vitamin C (for brightening), retinol (to buffer dryness), and ceramides (to repair the barrier). Apply HA first, then seal with a heavier cream.
Avoid Combining With
No major conflicts. However, applying HA without following with a moisturizer in dry climates can worsen dehydration. Always seal it in with an occlusive or emollient layer.
