Rice Extract
A traditional East Asian beauty ingredient rich in ferulic acid and oryzanol that brightens, hydrates, and protects — centuries of proven results.
What Is Rice Extract?
Rice extract (Oryza sativa) is derived from rice bran, rice water, or fermented rice and has been a cornerstone of East Asian beauty for over a thousand years — Japanese and Korean women have used rice water for face washing since ancient times. The science behind this tradition is robust: rice extract contains gamma-oryzanol (a potent antioxidant unique to rice), ferulic acid (the vitamin C stabilizer), phytic acid (a gentle exfoliant and chelator), kojic acid (a tyrosinase inhibitor), and vitamins B and E. Fermented rice (sake kasu or makgeolli) adds the benefits of amino acids and organic acids from the fermentation process. Rice bran oil provides essential fatty acids and oryzanol. This multi-compound profile makes rice extract one of the most comprehensive brightening and protective ingredients in skincare, addressing pigmentation, oxidative damage, and dehydration simultaneously.
Key Benefits

- Fermented rice adds probiotic benefits and enhanced absorption
- Improves skin elasticity and smoothness over time
How to Use Rice Extract
Rice toners and essences can be used generously morning and evening — apply after cleansing as the first treatment step. For the traditional rice water method, soak a cotton pad and press into skin. Rice-based serums should be applied before moisturizer. Fermented rice products (like sake kasu masks) can be used 2–3 times per week as a wash-off treatment. Rice bran oil makes an excellent final step for sealing in moisture. Rice extract is extremely gentle and requires no gradual introduction. For maximum brightening, pair with consistent SPF use to prevent new pigmentation.
Pairs Well With
Beautiful pairing with niacinamide (brightening duo), vitamin C (antioxidant + brightening), and propolis (glow-boosting). Rice + niacinamide is a gentle but effective brightening combo for sensitive skin.
Avoid Combining With
No conflicts. Rice extract is one of the gentlest ingredients in skincare and works with everything. The phytic acid content provides very mild exfoliation but not enough to conflict with other actives.
