Salicylic Acid
The only oil-soluble BHA that penetrates deep into pores to dissolve sebum, dead skin, and debris — the acne-fighting essential.
What Is Salicylic Acid?
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) derived from willow bark. Unlike water-soluble AHAs, salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which allows it to penetrate through the lipid layers of the skin and directly into the pore lining. Once inside, it dissolves the sebum and dead skin cell buildup that cause clogged pores, blackheads, and acne. Salicylic acid also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it particularly effective for the red, inflamed lesions of active breakouts. It works as both an exfoliant (loosening dead skin cell connections) and a comedolytic agent (preventing pore clogging), giving it a dual mechanism of action against acne that few other ingredients can match.
Key Benefits
- Deep-cleans pores by dissolving oil and debris from within
- Effectively treats and prevents blackheads and whiteheads
- Reduces active acne lesions and inflammation
- Exfoliates the skin surface for a smoother texture
- Regulates sebum production for less oily skin over time
- Anti-inflammatory properties calm red, angry breakouts
How to Use Salicylic Acid
Use a 2% salicylic acid cleanser, toner, or treatment 2–4 times per week, building up to daily as tolerated. For spot treatment, apply a thin layer directly to blemishes. Leave-on treatments (serums, gels) are more effective than wash-off cleansers. Always apply to clean, dry skin and follow with a moisturizer — salicylic acid can be drying. Avoid using on broken or sunburned skin. Since BHAs increase sun sensitivity, SPF is mandatory the following morning. Lower concentrations (0.5–1%) are available for sensitive skin.
Pairs Well With
Pairs well with niacinamide (oil control + barrier support), hyaluronic acid (hydration buffer), and centella asiatica (soothing). Can be alternated with retinol on different nights.
Avoid Combining With
Do not combine with other strong acids (AHAs), retinol, or benzoyl peroxide in the same routine — this causes over-exfoliation and barrier damage. Use BHAs and retinol on alternating nights.
