Squalane
A lightweight, non-comedogenic emollient that mimics the skin's natural oils — delivers silky moisture without clogging pores.
What Is Squalane?
Squalane is a hydrogenated (saturated) form of squalene, a lipid naturally produced by human sebaceous glands that makes up about 10–12% of our skin's sebum. Natural squalene production peaks in our teens and declines significantly with age, contributing to dryness and loss of suppleness. In skincare, squalane is produced by hydrogenating squalene sourced from olives, sugarcane, or amaranth — the hydrogenation makes it stable, non-oxidizing, and shelf-safe. Squalane is molecularly similar to the skin's own lipids, allowing it to integrate seamlessly into the stratum corneum without feeling heavy or greasy. It's non-comedogenic, fast-absorbing, and suitable for virtually every skin type, making it one of the most universally well-tolerated moisturizing ingredients available.
Key Benefits
- Deeply moisturizes without feeling heavy or greasy
- Non-comedogenic — won't clog pores or cause breakouts
- Mimics the skin's natural lipids for seamless integration
- Strengthens the skin barrier and prevents moisture loss
- Lightweight texture absorbs quickly, suitable for oily skin
- Protects against oxidative damage as a natural antioxidant
How to Use Squalane
Apply 2–3 drops of squalane oil or a squalane-based moisturizer as the last or near-last step in your routine to seal in hydration. Can be used morning and evening. Squalane is especially effective applied over water-based serums (like hyaluronic acid) to lock in moisture. For dry skin, mix a drop into your foundation for a dewy finish. In K-beauty routines, it works beautifully as a facial oil step. Because it's so similar to natural sebum, even oily skin types find it comfortable. A little goes a long way — start with 2 drops and adjust.
Pairs Well With
Pairs with all water-based hydrators (hyaluronic acid, snail mucin). Excellent over retinol to buffer irritation. Also works well with vitamin C to prevent oxidation and improve penetration.
Avoid Combining With
No conflicts. Squalane is an inert, stable oil that works with everything. Avoid layering too many oils on very acne-prone skin, but squalane itself is safe.
