Tranexamic Acid

A derivative of lysine that specifically targets stubborn hyperpigmentation and melasma — the dark-spot specialist.

What Is Tranexamic Acid?

Tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine, originally developed as a medication to reduce bleeding by inhibiting plasmin activation. Its skin-brightening effects were discovered serendipitously when patients taking oral tranexamic acid for other conditions noticed significant fading of melasma. In skincare, tranexamic acid works by inhibiting the plasmin-tyrosinase pathway: it prevents UV-induced plasmin from activating the melanocyte-stimulating pathway, thereby reducing melanin production at its source. Unlike many brightening agents that merely inhibit tyrosinase, tranexamic acid targets the upstream signaling that triggers melanin synthesis, making it particularly effective for stubborn, UV-triggered hyperpigmentation like melasma. It has become one of the most sought-after ingredients in K-beauty for treating stubborn dark spots that resist vitamin C and niacinamide.

Key Benefits

  • Specifically targets and fades stubborn melasma and hyperpigmentation
  • Inhibits the melanin-production pathway at its source
  • Effective for UV-induced dark spots that resist other brighteners
  • Gentle and well-tolerated with minimal irritation risk
  • Can be used alongside other brightening ingredients for enhanced results
  • Reduces redness in rosacea-like conditions

How to Use Tranexamic Acid

Apply a tranexamic acid serum (typically 2–5% concentration) twice daily after cleansing and before moisturizer. For targeted dark spot treatment, apply an extra layer directly to pigmented areas. Tranexamic acid is gentle enough for morning use without sun sensitivity concerns, but SPF is still essential to prevent new pigmentation. For stubborn melasma, combine with niacinamide and vitamin C (at different times of day) for a triple-brightening approach. Results typically appear after 8–12 weeks of consistent use. Tranexamic acid is one of the few ingredients shown to work for melasma in both oral and topical forms.

Pairs Well With

Excellent pairing with niacinamide (dual brightening), vitamin C (antioxidant + brightening), and arbutin. The tranexamic acid + niacinamide combo is K-beauty's current gold standard for pigmentation.

Avoid Combining With

No major conflicts. Tranexamic acid is gentle and compatible with most ingredients. Avoid mixing with very strong AHAs at the same time (pH concerns), but they can be used in the same routine at different steps.
